A Numerical Study of the Motion and Structural Responses of Interlinked Spars in Irregular Waves

Abstract

A numerical investigation on the motion characteristics and structural responses for three different arrays of inter-linked SPARs has been carried out in irregular waves. Hydrodynamic coefficients were calculated by the 9-node higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). Elastic connectors and taut/catenary mooring lines are included in the numerical model, while aerodynamics and rotor-dynamics have not been considered yet. The connectors are assumed to be circular elastic beams, and FEM modeling are used for both connectors and mooring lines. Minimum energy principle and Lagrange multiplier method are applied to formulate the governing equation for the dynamics of the beam and mooring lines. The performance of three different arrays of inter-linked SPARs have been evaluated and compared in irregular waves ‘5 by 1’ array, ‘2 by 2’ array and ‘3 by 3’ arrays.
