Unmanned vehicles develop at impressive rate: Capable of independently drawing digital topographic maps at depth of 2,500 m

- KRISO begins development of integrated USV-AUV system -

□ The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (President Booki Kim, hereinafter “KRISO”) was selected as the lead institute of the Combined Marine Research Group, committed to the development of an integrated unmanned surface vehicle (USV)-autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) system. The project commencement meeting will be held on August 13 to 14.

□ The Combined Marine Research Group Consortium is comprised of 19 organizations, including KRISO, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST), LIG Nex1, and Korea Maritime & Ocean University. The project will receive 41 billion won in funding (35.7 billion from government) over seven years until May 2027.

* Combined Marine Research Group Consortium: KRISO, Daeyang Electric, Factory IMS, GDL System, Korean Marine Equipment Research Institute, Keumha Naval Technology, KIOST, Tokimec Korea, Korea Maritime & Ocean University, LIG Nex1, Oceantech, GigaRF, Saeron S&I, Borsys, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence, Changwon National University (19 in total)

□ The Combined Marine Research Group will develop an integrated USV-AUV system to conduct marine missions such as deep-sea topographic survey, maritime environment survey, and underwater search, which are difficult for USVs to handle alone.

□ The development of the integrated USV-AUV system will secure technology for autonomous cooperation of a heterogeneous multi-agent system, comprised of one USV, two PCAUVs and one BCAUV, as well as a integrated system demonstration platform.

* PCAUV: Power Controlled Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

* BCAUV: Buoyancy Controlled Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

□ The integrated system demonstration platform can draw digital topographical maps on its own up to a depth of 2,500 m, and collect oceanographic data up to a depth of 1,000 m.

□ Booki Kim, the president of KRISO, said, “If the integrated system demonstration platform is successfully developed, it can be utilized for similar technologies requiring sea trials. This will accelerate the development of unmanned technology in Korea.”
