dc.description.abstract | Ships strengthened for navigation in ice encounter level ice, ice ridge and broken ice fields. In particular, Ice that survives a melting season, is second year or multi-year ice and is stronger than first year ice due to its lower salt content. It can also be thicker than first-year ice. In ice infested waters, compression of broken ice floes can cause pretty significant problems to merchant vessels, making them beset in ice and possibly causing structural damage and decrease of ship performance. Thus, the ship resistance in broken ice channels is a very critical concern to the designers of ice-going vessels. Generally the basic mechanics of ship and ice interaction is the crushing, breaking, and submersion phases for level ice and the hull shape can effect on especially the breaking and submersion phases. But, in broken ice channels, major resistance component can be caused by ice rubble near the waterline and by friction along the whole hull, thus main parameters of broken ice channels are the width and size of the broken ice channel and broken ice pieces. The objective of this study is to understand the physical aspects of ship performance in ice and to investigate the characteristics of the ship resistance in broken ice channels. In particular, this study identifies the ship resistance in ice associated with the broken ice channel width and the size of broken ice pieces. Model tests of towed-resistance condition | - |
