KRISO to Lead Development of Liquid Hydrogen Based Eco-Friendly Fuel Propulsion Technology

▶ KRISO, KSOE, POSCO, Hylium Industries sign MOU

▶ Joint technological development for accelerated application of liquid hydrogen to ships

The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering(KRISO, President Booki Kim) announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding(MOU) on the promotion of the application of liquid hydrogen to ships together with Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering(KSOE, CEOs Oh-gap Kwon and Sam-hyun Ka), POSCO(CEO Jeong-Woo Choi), and Hylium Industries(CEO Seo Young Kim) on the 6th in the KSOE Bundang Office.

As part of a proactive measure regarding marine environment regulations of the international community, this agreement was established for cooperation in joint technological development on the application of liquid hydrogen to ships.

The four organizations that signed the MOU agreed to cooperation on the development of liquid hydrogen fuel tanks and fuel supply technology for ships, liquid hydrogen fuel tank design and approval promotion, support of the commercialization of liquid hydrogen powered ships, development of steel materials for liquid hydrogen storage and transportation, support of steel materials for the manufacturing of liquid hydrogen fuel containers, manufacturing of containers for liquid hydrogen fuel use and transportation, and supply of liquid hydrogen for testing.

Hydrogen is a next generation eco-friendly fuel that is highlighted for its advantage of having no greenhouse gas emissions such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, unlike conventional fossil fuels.

* Nitrogen oxides(NOx): representative pollutant that causes air pollution

* Sulfur oxides(SOx): major pollutant produced from the combustion of fossil fuels and causes air pollution

Although gaseous hydrogen lacks economic feasibility and safety due to its low storage density, a large amount of hydrogen can be stored in a limited space through liquefaction at the low temperature of -253℃. Also, the storage pressure is maintained at around 10bar, making it advantageous in terms of safety.

Based on its high economic feasibility and safety, liquid hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the paradigm shift to carbon-free eco-friendly ships.

KRISO is a research institution focused on eco-friendly ships, and through this MOU, KRISO plans to carry out the development of liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for ships and research on technologies related to fuel supply.

The liquid hydrogen fuel tank on ships constantly shakes due to waves, but the safety of the fuel tanks is expected to improve by applying the technological know-how of KRISO, accumulated over 40 years, regarding computational fluid dynamics and structural analysis. Additionally, development of fuel supply technology will also be carried out, which will enable the provision of liquid hydrogen in fuel tanks to hydrogen fuel cells so that it can be utilized as the propellant of ships.

KRISO President Booki Kim said, “We will do our best in the joint research and development with the MOU organizations for the commercialization of liquid hydrogen applied ships.”
