Established in 1973, KRISO has contributed to the development of Korea’s ship and ocean engineering industry through extensive research on ships and offshore plants. Since its launch as an affiliate of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology on January 1, 2014, it has exercised independent responsible management in all activities
As the only government-funded research institute in the field of ships and offshore plants (under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries), KRISO resolves national issues by developing, applying, and commercializing novel technology in related fields such as design, safety, and environment. It was established for the purpose of conducting creative research while setting international standards.
To this end, KRISO is conducting research in various areas. It has strengthened national competitiveness by developing eco-friendly, high-efficiency shipbuilding technology, and promoted innovative growth through advanced offshore plant technology. In addition, it prepared the country for the fourth industrial revolution by embracing digital convergence and innovation, and developed maritime accident response technology to ensure a safer ocean environment for all.
KRISO will create a new growth engine in ship and ocean engineering by driving innovation in technology amidst global changes such as the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, climate change, and enhanced IMO regulations. The institute will exert its best efforts to pave the way for Korea to emerge as a global maritime powerhouse.
