KRISO’s Liquid Hydrogen Fuel Tank for Ships Wins Grand Prize at H2 Innovation Awards

□ Korea Research Institue of Ships & Offshore Engineering (President Booki Kim, hereinafter KRISO) announced on September 5th that it won the Grand Prize at the H2 Innovation Awards, H2 MEET 2022 held on the 31st.

□ H2 MEET is a global hydrogen industry exhibition that provides an overview of the worldwide hydrogen industry and technology trends in its 3rd year. It was held in KINTEX, Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do Province from August 31st to September 3rd.

□ A total of 241 companies (65 non-Korean) from 17 countries participated, with the opening ceremony attended by prominent figures such as Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.

□  At the H2 Innovation Awards, held on the first day of H2 MEET 2022, the KRISO-developed liquid hydrogen fuel tank for ships received the Grand Prize in recognition of its innovation and advancement in the field of hydrogen storage and transportation.

□ KRISO’s booth was also selected by international media as the Best of H2 MEET 2022.

□ The liquid hydrogen fuel tank for ships stores hydrogen, an eco-friendly energy source, in an extreme low temperature environment (-253℃) to increase storage capacity dramatically compared to the existing gas hydrogen method. Three new designs developed by KRISO (Head Researcher Kim Hyun-seok) have been applied to achieve equivalent or better insulation performance compared to fuel tanks of similar capacities developed in leading nations. It is hoped that this technology will help Korea achieve leadership in the future market for hydrogen ships and marine carbon neutrality.

□ At the award ceremony, KRISO President Booki Kim commented, “We would like to thank Hylium Industries Inc., Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and POSCO, our partners in the development of the liquid hydrogen fuel tanks for ships. [...] We will continue our efforts as a government-funded research institute to enhance the competitiveness of the industry by developing and spreading eco-friendly technologies.”

□ Meanwhile, KRISO, Korea’s only government-funded research institute in the field of ship and offshore plants, has turned its focus to eco-friendly technologies to achieve carbon neutrality and overcome the climate crisis. KRISO continues to advance technological R&D initiatives in the field, examples of which include an electricity-propelled car ferry with mobile and replaceable batteries used for transportation between islands, and marine green hydrogen produced using marine energy such as floating offshore wind power.
