The 2nd KRISO Future Ship Idea Competition: Save the Ocean to Save the Planet, held by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (President Booki Kim, hereinafter KRISO), came to a successful conclusion with the final awards ceremony being held on November 6th (Sat).

The competition was held under the theme of “eco-friendly ships of the future”, to inspire students to take interest in ship and ocean engineering, and support the development of future scientists and engineers.

The submission of entries began in July, with the preliminary round being held on October 28th (Thu) to select 12 entries that made it to the final. The 12 selected entries were evaluated through in-person presentations at the final.

The final round was evaluated according to the criteria of creativity, logic, and practicality. Students who presented the 8 entries* in the final selection received their awards at a ceremony held in the main hall of KRISO.

* Grand prize (1), Runner up (1), Second runners up (2) [Elementary school Middle and high school category]

In the elementary school category, student Jiwoo Yang won the grand prize with the idea “ship of the future cleaning the ocean”, while the middle and high school category went to student Yeseong Yoo for the “Multi eco ship.”

The 2 grand prize winners will each receive a unique model ship designed according to their proposed ideas as a supplementary prize.

A member of the judging panel commented on the entire competition, “it was very impressive that even elementary school category entries presented a wide range of future-oriented and eco-friendly ideas,” adding, “the middle and high school category presented ideas using renewable energy such as electric-propulsion, hydrogen-fueled ships, wind power and solar power, reflecting the students’ impressive understanding of recent societal trends as we work towards carbon neutrality.”

Meanwhile, a science quiz was held as a side-event to the competition, to enthusiastic participation by the attendees.

KRISO President Booki Kim commented, “I thank the you students for participating in the KRISO Future Ship Idea Competition, which is currently in its second year,” adding, “having seen your creative ideas, I’m now filled with hope for an even brighter future in Korean ships and ocean engineering.”
