- Abstract
- Underwater source localization is one of the important topics for various underwater operations. The beamforming technique using a linear array is widely used in imaging sonars or other military purposes. In the environments of high speed ocean currents a streamline-shaped array on underwater vehicles would be a good solution for detecting front sound sources rather than a linear array. This paper analyzes beamforming performance with an elliptic array of transducers through numerical simulation. In the
simulation plane wave is assumed and the conventional beamforming technique is used. The
beamforming performance is compared with the one for a linear array. The results say that an elliptic array can be a good solution for the estimation of the incident angle of a plane wave although it shows lower performance than a linear array in some aspects.
