- Abstract
- This paper presents a conceptual study of an underwater hydrogen fuel cell (PEMFC) Balance of Plant (BOP) system for long-endurance operations of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). To overcome the limitations of conventional battery power systems, the study analyzes major subsystems for hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen storage, supply, recirculation, and water management. Key design considerations such as high-pressure environment, oxygen supply constraints, buoyancy control, and corrosion protection are discussed. The results provide foundational insights for conceptual and detailed design of BOP systems for underwater fuel cells.
